Give Thanks Before A Meal

Give-thanks-main

Take a moment of quiet around the table or with some simple words of thanks, to remind yourself -- and those you are with -- that life is a gift and not a race and that what we eat is often provided by people who have very little compared to us. There's no better time to try this than at the start of a New Year.

Many of our meals are rushed; many of them take place while other things also demand our attention. Many times we are with people who might not fully recognise what saying grace signifies. But at Christmas there are usually meals we all sit down together for and meals we take a little more time with.

Your thanks might be silent. Might be from a book of graces. Might be very short. But making time to give thanks reminds us of all we have forgotten to be thankful for.

This is my Lent Challenge to myself, to give thanks before I eat and remember how many people there are in this world who won’t get enough of the right kinds of food today.

My family do this at nearly every dinner time (at least when we remember!) We try to do it all the time. Sometimes we make it up or sometimes we read from a grace book – depends. I’ve got to always remember to really think what I’m saying though, because I sometimes do but not always if I’m a bit rushed. :)

I used to do this before every meal but have now slipped out of the routine. I’m going to try and start it up again. It’s a good way to reflect a bit before a meal, and take time to thank God for what you have in your life, as well as thinking of those less fortunate.
