Look out for the outsider and invite them in

Try to engage more with those who are left on the outside of things. Even just a smile and a simple ‘hello’ can make all the difference to the way someone feels. In fact, sometimes it’s the very smallest and seemingly most insignificant things that can have the deepest impact. So, make it your mission not to ignore those on the fringes but to make them feel more included by the way you behave towards them.

(On a serious note: be careful with this one. Don’t necessarily engage the complete stranger, but rather those you sort of know who you also know get easily left out of things and on the edge. Be honest: you know who they are.)

I’m always trying to smile more, but still I probably should do it more, and chat to people I know but don’t talk to. :-)
