Fiona Holmes reports on the recent Youth Participation Strategy meeting:

The YPS (Youth Participation Strategy) reference group met on the 17& 18 of June, in St Katharine’s in London, and boy did we have a lot to do! We are the group who look at everything to do the youth participation at the Methodist Church and keep a check that it is on track and moving forwards. On the agenda was: discussion on the format of the YPS reference group, discussions on the Youth presidency, resolutions to conference and looking onto the Big Evaluation of the YPS at the Methodist conference 2013!
Our meeting started with a short devotion of looking at ‘change’ Both the change in our pockets that we can so often see as ‘just change’ and the changes that the Methodist church and the YPS face, we spent time praying for those who are affected by the changes within the YPS and wider Methodist church and rounded off by seeing that the change in our pockets when put together can amount to something really great.
So our business started as it always does with an update from Jude Levermore, (the Participation Project Manager) we heard a little about the progress of the new OPP (One Programme Participants) placements for September, and heard a little about Generate 3 (Methodist Youth Assembly 2011) and even got to look at the Online booking form which is now live!
We then moved on to the Youth Presidency. We looked at the proposals that the council are taking to the Methodist Conference and the really exciting news is that we are asking the Conference to make the post FULL TIME again!! We looked at the implication of this and started to think of how we can best support the Youth President and begin to see if there can be a specific group put into place for this.
After a very yummy lunch armed with flip chart paper and pens we explored the format of the YPS Reference Group. We asked ourselves lots of different questions and began to have a clear focus on the role of the group over the next two years. We spent some time with Doug Swanney (Cluster Head of the Discipleship and Ministries Cluster at Methodist Church House) thinking about the best way in which the YPS can be evaluated for 2013 Methodist Conference. We also looked over the resolutions from the Youth Assembly to Conference and were very enthused to here all about what the reps would be taking to this year’s Methodist Conference. We rounded up our meeting by drawing up our action points and looking ahead to the work the Reference Group will be doing.
